Using embroidery and painting – on canvas, paper or glass – she combines dissolution with detail to express her ongoing fascination with everyday city life. From her easel she explores both urban and natural environments, constantly in pursuit of light. Her endless search takes her down busy streets, forest paths and high above the city. Captured first in photography and then in pigment or thread, her understated scenes are defined and transformed by light. Each individual brushstroke or stitch reveals the ever-evolving interaction between sunlight and shadow. For Wykerd, a city is a place whose energy materialises in the meeting point of such dualities – concrete and trees, grids and the flow of water, rhythm and stillness, control and chance. Process is an important part of the work. While Wykerd’s considered mark-making is meditative, the slow layering of brushstrokes, combined with translucent washes of soft colour, allow her to depict light in all its changing qualities. There are also elements of serendipity at play, acknowledging the necessity of exploring the unfamiliar in order to gain insight. Wykerd’s work is a quiet reverie. Whether she depicts a dappled pool, a shaded street or golden beach, the muted scenes she captures are calm oases amid the distractions of contemporary living. Her translucent washes of verdant colour around figures swimming, strolling and floating create scenes of immersion in nature. By including such figures in her work, she invites her audience to share her vision. The dreamily indistinct backgrounds and tranquil palette combine to give us moments of rest and reflection where we can be reacquainted with nature, and our selves. This lived experience is central to how I approach my creative practice and its ongoing investigation into hybridity and transformation. Working in figurative ceramics, I respond to the past intuitively, treating it as an emotional memory carried forward through fragmented images and stories. Within my work, clay functions as both material and metaphor. My process relies on the physical act of hand-building and layering; through the manipulation of clay and glaze, forms and meanings change at each stage of making. This act of fragmentation and reconstruction becomes a visual language that directly mirrors the fluid, evolving nature of identity. The resulting hybrid figures exist between familiar and fictional spaces, drawing simultaneously on history and imagination. As a young child I was always drawing, seeking creative outlets. Initially pursuing a passion in fashion design, but soon turned my focus to photography, teaching myself the necessary skills. This previous experience in design and photography culminated in my current digital art practice over recent years. I’ve also had the privilege to work and live in different places in the world. I have lived in Pretoria, Toronto, Joburg, Phuket, and now Cape town. I believe all these different places have given me a perspective of human nature and a philosophy that I apply to my everyday life, which is that we as human beings are more the same than we are different. My approach is the playful blending of luxury fashion elements and South African brand iconography. The nostalgia these well-known local brands hold for so many of us a reminder of our shared memories and associations, a connecting device. “We as South Africans so often focus on what makes us different that we forget how much we are alike. In my mind I want my subjects to form a part of a united tribe, one of courage, positivity and joy.” I always want to add a sense of charm, sass and attitude in my fictional portraits that allude to Magic Realism, but with a local, urban grit. The subjects convey an unapologetic sense of pride, freedom, and self-love. I like to craft a real-world context around these created characters informed by the backstory imagined for each subject while creating and composing the image. With many of the images employing principles of classic portraiture, there is also an unapologetic self-assurance and playfulness that grounds the work in the present. A composition and pose at once acknowledge the Classic tradition, but simultaneously embrace the ‘selfie’ culture of today. CLICK HERE TO CONTACT US: Mail Johan Alberts "In my recent collection of acrylic and oil paintings – entitled HOMOGENISE – I consciously shine a spotlight on prejudices and promote unity by altering and reworking familiar and famous artworks. My significant twist is the way in which I add an African narrative into the mostly Eurocentric imagery. I feel my current work speaks to a global audience through its sense of nostalgia. People immediately recognise the original artwork and then do a double-take on it. “What the heck is going on here?”. I hope to communicate more universally relevant characteristics with my art. Those things that are present in everyone – however they identify, wherever they call home, whatever life looks like. By splicing apart two seemingly diverse worlds and uniting them on canvas, I pay homage to our gorgeous similarities. And hope to communicate this: don’t we look even more beautiful together than apart? I feel that people are too quick to focus on the differences – the distortion – between one another. Out of a sense of fear, they reach for what is theirs and hold it close, defining anything that doesn’t fit within their tight parameters as different and in turn, a threat. After all, the existence of differences within society is driven and empowered by cultural and artistic narratives. As an artist, I have the power (and responsibility) to inform these narratives, alter them as I see fit, and do it through beauty and colour. I do this by taking what is known and accepted and overturning it by introducing cultural narratives that have been overlooked for far too long. How do our similarities AND differences – ethnically, culturally, religiously, etc – enhance and empower our lives? Through my art, I use emancipation, strength, immortality, beauty, and the acceptance of pain as a natural part of life as my guides. All with the intention and ultimate goal of inclusion. For as long as I can remember, the main aim of my art is to offer a visually pleasing respite from the dull doldrums of the everyday. I want to add beauty to the world, and offer people an opportunity to dwell within a colourful, hopeful space as they consume my art. From a more societal and political perspective, I set out to communicate how our differences – be they ethnic, cultural, religious, gender, etc – are also gateways to our similarities. Aimee watched the women runners move through the space as spectators walked alongside them and cheered, creating a lovely sense of energy and presence along the road.
